Executive Summary — Rick Rule on the Next Commodity Supercycle
Interview length: 42:24
Danny and legendary resource investor Rick Rule discuss the bond market, inflation, gold and silver, uranium, lithium, oil, natural gas, coal, copper, and where Rule sees the best opportunities in natural resources.
The central theme is that years of underinvestment, inflation, energy insecurity, and deteriorating fiat purchasing power are creating a potentially powerful long-term setup for natural-resource investors—but Rule repeatedly distinguishes between short-term trading opportunities and investments that can work over a much longer horizon.
1. The Bond Market May Be Signaling Something Bigger — 0:00–4:51
Rule opens with a blunt assessment of long-term U.S. bonds, questioning why anyone would willingly lock money into a 10-year bond yielding roughly 4.6–4.7% when purchasing power is deteriorating.
He warns that rising yields could strengthen the dollar in the short term, potentially putting pressure on gold, oil, and other dollar-denominated commodities. Traders therefore need to be cautious.
But Rule makes an important distinction: rising nominal rates aren’t necessarily bearish for gold if they are being driven by inflation expectations. He points to the 1970s, when nominal interest rates rose dramatically while gold increased many times over.
His longer-term view is particularly bullish: he expects the combination of inflation and monetary deterioration to be favorable for gold over the next decade, even if the next several weeks are unpredictable.
